Adjective: Order

ลำดับการใส่ adjective เข้าไปข้างหน้า noun เป็นดังนี้

size, age, shape, colour, origin, material

เช่น

a petite, white, French, linen jacket

จริงๆ ไม่ได้เป็นกฎ grammar ตายตัว แต่เรียกว่าเป็นความนิยมมากกว่ามั้ง

Adjective order

Tense (ตอนที่ 7): Past Continuous

ไม่ได้เขียนซะนาน ด้วยการเปลี่ยนแปลงในชีวิตรุมเร้า ต่อละนะ

Form: was, were + Ving

การใช้
1. Interrupted Action ในอดีต

เช่น
I was watching TV when she called. While I was writing the email, the computer suddenly went off.

ประโยคประเภทนี้มักมี when หรือ while อยู่ในประโยค แต่ความแตกต่างในการใช้ก็คือ
when + past simple
while + past continous

นอกจากนี้ อาจจะใช้ในบทสนทนา ซึ่งไม่เป็น compound sentences เนื่องจากผู้ฟังเข้าใจประโยคที่ถูกละไว้แล้ว

A: What were you doing when you broke your leg?
B: I was snowboarding. (when I broke my leg - ถูกละไว้)

2. Interruption เหมือนกัน แต่เป็นการระบุเวลา

เช่น
Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner.

ความแตกต่างระหว่างการใช้ past continuous กับ past simple ในกรณี เช่น
Last night at 6 PM, I ate dinner. - เริ่มกินข้าวตอน 6 โมง
Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner. - กำลังกินข้าวอยู่ ไ่ม่รู้ว่าเริ่มกินเมื่อไร

3. Parallel Action ในอดีต
การใช้ลักษณะนี้ก็จะคล้ายๆ กับแบบแรก เพียงแต่ว่าไม่มี action ไหน interrupt action ไหน แต่ว่าดำเนินไปพร้อมๆ กัน

เช่น
I was studying while he was making dinner.
What were you doing while you were waiting?

หรือลองเข้าไปดูตาม reference ด้านล่างนะค่ะ จะมีรูปให้ด้วย เผื่อจะเข้าใจได้มากขึ้น

4. Repeated Action + Irritation ในอดีต
อันนี้ไม่ค่อยเคยเห็นเหมือนกันค่ะ น่าจะคล้ายๆ กับ Past Simple และ used to แต่ต่างกันที่จะมีความหมายในเชิงลบ เป็นการกระทำที่ทำให้เกิดความรำคาญ ซึ่งมักจะใช้กับ always, constantly

เช่น
She was always coming to class late.
He was constantly talking. He annoyed everyone.

Verb: Verb + Verb

เคยเขียนถึงเรื่อง Linking Verb ไปแล้วตอนหนึ่งนะค่ะ ซึ่ง Linking Verb เป็น verb ที่สามารถตามด้วย adjective ได้ ตอนนี้เราจะมาพูด verb อีกกลุ่มหนึ่งซึ่งสามารถตามด้วย verb form อื่นๆ ได้ เช่น Ving, V infinitive with/without to.

Without object

1. Verb + Ving

ได้แก่ admit, avoid, consider, deny, fancy, finish, hate, imagine, mind, love, postpone, regret, risk, stop, suggest
หรือ phrasal verb ได้แก่ carry on, give up, go on, keep on, put off

ตัวอย่าง

The children admitted taking the sweets.
I considered becoming a singer when I left school.
Do you fancy going to see a movie tonight?
Would you mind opening the window? It's rather hot in here.
He suggested eating out, but I had already prepared dinner at home.

The children carried on playing even though it had started to rain.
I gave up smoking 3 years ago.
The teacher went on talking even though some of the students weren't listening.
Why do you keep on eating fatty food when you know it's bad for you?

2. Verb + Verb Infinitive with to

They stopped to talk - แปลว่าหยุดทำอย่างอื่น เพื่อที่จะหันมาคุย
They stopped talking - แปลว่าหยุดพูด

I didn't remember to email - แปลว่าลืม email (ไม่ได้ส่ง email)
I don't remember emailing to you - แปลว่า ลืมไปแล้วว่าได้ส่ง email ไปหาหรือเปล่า (อาจจะส่งหรือไม่ได้ส่งก็ได้)

I remember telling her about the bowling - แปลว่า จำได้่ว่ามีการบอกเธอเกี่ยวกับ bowling (บอกไปแล้ว)
I remember to tell her about the bowling - แปลว่า จะจำไว้ว่าจะต้องบอกเธอ (ยังไม่ได้บอก)

I try using a heavier bowling ball - แปลว่า จะลองใช้ลูก bowling ที่หนักขึ้น
I try to use use heavier bowling, but it was too heavy. - แปลว่า พยายามจะใช้ลูก bowling ที่หนักขึ้นแล้ว แต่ว่ามันหนักไป (คือไม่ได้ใช้ลูกที่หนัก - เป็นการบอกความพยายามที่ล้มเหลว)

I've forgotten telling you that it's my birthday today - แปลว่า ฉันลืมไปแล้วว่าเคยบอกว่าวันนี้เป็นวันเกิด (เป็นการลืมสิ่งที่เคยทำไปในอดีต)
I forgot to telephone the bank before I went on holiday - แปลว่า ลืมโทรไปหาธนาคาร ก่อนวันหยุด (แปลว่าไม่ได้โทร หรือไม่ได้ทำสิ่งนั้น)

I regret changing my job - แปลว่า เสียใจที่ได้เปลี่ยนงานมา (คือได้เปลี่ยนงานไปแล้ว - เสียใจกับสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว)
I regret to tell you that you have not passed your exam - แปลว่า เสียใจที่จะบอกว่าคุณสอบตก (เสียใจกับสิ่งที่กำัลังจะทำ)

With object
และสำหรับ verb บางตัว เมื่อใช้กับ indirect object จะใช้ในรูปแบบ

1. Verb + object + Verb Infinitive without to

อันได้แก่ make, let, have

ตัวอย่าง

The teacher made us do our homework.
The teacher let us leave early.

สำหรับ verb ในลักษณะนี้ เมื่อใช้เป็น passive จะตามด้วย Verb Infinitive with to

เช่น

I was made to repeat the exercise.

อีกคำหนึ่งที่อาจจะสามารถ เข้ากับกลุ่นนี้ก็คือ help

help สามารถใช้แบบ help + Verb Infinitive with to ก็ได้ แต่ว่าโดยส่วนใหญ่จะใช้แบบละ to มากกว่า โดยเฉพาะการใช้แบบ informal ดังนั้นจึงไม่ได้เขียนรวมไปกับ make และ let เพราะว่า make กับ let จะไม่สามารถใช้กับ Verb Infinitive with to ได้เลย

ตัวอย่าง

Come and help me life this box.
This charity aims to help people (to) help themselves.

2. Verb + object + Verb Infinitive with to

ซึ่ง verb โดยทั่วไปจะเป็นกลุ่มนี้

Summary

โดยสรุปก็เป็นดังนี้

V + VV + Ving
without object
admit, avoid, consider, delay, deny, dislike, enjoy, fancy, favor, finish, hate, imagine, mind, miss, love, postpone, practice, quit, recall, recommend, resist, risk, stop, suggest
carry on, give up, go on, keep on, put off
*forget, regret, remember, stop, try
with objecthave, make, let, suggest
* คำในกลุ่มนี้สามารถใช้ได้ทั้ง Ving และ to verb แต่ความหมายต่างกัน
Note: สำหรับ verb ทั่วไปที่ไม่ได้อยู่ในตาราง ส่วนใหญ่จะใช้กับ to verb

แบบเจาะจงเวลา

เด็กๆ เคยเรียนใช่ม่ะค่ะ today, tomorrow, yesterday. ง่ายปาย ใครๆ ก็รู้อ่ะ

แล้ว last week, last month, last year ก็ยังไม่มีอะไร อาทิตย์ที่แล้ว เดือนที่แล้ว ปีที่แล้ว
เอ.. แล้ว 2 อาทิตย์ที่แล้วอ่ะ ว่าไง ... เฉลย ก็ใช้ 2 weeks ago ไง หรือ 3 days ago, 3 months ago, 5 years ago อย่าได้หลงไปใช้ last 2 weeks นะ มันใช้ม่ะได้

ถ้าจะพูดถึงอนาคต ก็ next week, next month, next year ว่ากันไป
แล้ว อีก 2 เดือนข้างหน้าอ่ะ ก็ next 2 months แล้วก็ next 3 weeks, next 4 years
หรือจะบอกว่า สิ้นเดือนนี้ ก็ by the end of the month เช่น The new restaurant will be open by the end of the month.
เวลานี้ของปีหน้า ก็ this time next year เช่น This time next year, we'll be millionaires!

Past
a moment ago - เมื่อกี้นี้
a short time ago - นานกว่าเมื่อกี้นี้หน่อยนึงมั้ง
the other day - เมื่อวันก่อน (ไม่รู้ว่าวันไหนเหมือนกัน)
ages and ages ago - เมื่อนานมาแล้ว
many moons ago - นานมาแล้วเหมือนกัน

เช่น
I've already heard the news. She told me a short time ago.
I went shopping the other day.
I've know about it for a very long time. She told me ages and ages ago.
Many moons ago, he told me the story of his life.

Present
for the time being - ตอนนี้, ช่วงนี้
these days - ทุกวันนี้
in this day and age - ในยุคสมัยนี้

เช่น
For the time being, I'm catching the bus to work, but I hope to get a bicycle soon.
These days I'm happy at work, but there were times in the past when I was unhappy.
In this day and age it is normal for women to be senior managers, but it wasn't always like that.

Very soon or immediately
as soon as possible
straight away
in a minute or two
/ in a second or two

Future
in the not too distant future เช่น I'll be seeing my sister in the not too distant future.

Verb: Linking verbs

เรารู้ๆ กันอยู่นะค่ะว่า ปกติแล้ว ถ้าเราจะใช้ adjective จะต้องใชักับ Verb to be เพราะว่า adjective ขนายนาม ก็ต้องใช้กับ เป็น อยู่ คือ เช่น She is beautiful

แต่มี verb บางประเภทที่สามารถใช้แทน Verb to be ในกรณีนี้ได้ คือสามารถตามด้วย adjective ซึ่ง verb พวกนี้ก็คือ linking verb หรือ copula ซึ่งแบ่งเป็นประเภทได้ดังนี้

Verbs of perception: seem, appear
Verbs of sense: look, feel, taste, smell, sound
Change-of-state verbs: become, grow, get, go, turn

verb พวกนี้แหละที่สามารถจะตามได้ adjective ไำด้ เช่น

Your plan seems realistic.
He appears older than he really is.
The blue dress looks better.
The sun got hotter and hotter.
His face went white with shock.

แต่ทั้งนี้ทั้นนั้นก็ไม่ได้แปลว่า linking verb หรือ copula เหล่านี้จะตามด้วย adverb เหมือนปกติไม่ได้นะค่ะ ก็ยังสามารถใช้เหมือน verb ทั่วไปได้เช่นเดิม เช่น

She looks angrily at her husband. - เธอมองสามีอย่างโกรธๆ angrily ขยาย looks
She looks angry. - เธอโกรธ เหมือนกับ she is angry แปลเหมือนกันค่ะ แต่ angry ขยาย she.

ได้ทั้งสองค่ะ ถูกหลักไวยกรณ์ อ่านเข้าใจ แต่ความหมายต่างกัน ลองดูอีกสักตัวอย่างนะค่ะ

The cake tasted beautiful. - เค้กอร่อย beautiful ขยาย cake
She quickly tasted the cake. - เธอชิมเค้กอย่างรวดเร็ว quickly ขยาย taste

พอเข้าใจกันนะค่ะ

Would you mind + Ving เช่น Would you mind sending me another copy of the agenda?
Please + verb
